Rick Hall came to Iron Heart Winery in 2015 to assist with the design of the production facility, and is now Iron Heart Winery’s winemaker. Rick has a great deal of experience making wine in our region, having worked at a number of facilities in Virginia and North Carolina, including spending 14 years at Chateau Morrisette in Meadows of Dan, VA where he became head winemaker in 2008. Rick and his crew won hundreds of medals for the Chateau, including gold, platinum, best in class and best in show awards at competitions across the nation. Rick is enthusiastic about working now on a smaller, boutique type scale where a high degree of care can infuse the process.
Rick has a background in the sciences, with a Biology degree from Virginia Tech, and has been involved in the arts as well, being a musician, visual artist and classically trained chef. Rick’s familiarity with the culinary arts is what led him to winemaking in the first place, and informs his winemaking practice. “I believe great winemaking is a fusion of art and science,” says Rick. “The science part can give clear guidance to the process, yet the best results are those attained when winemaking is approached as an art form.”
